It’s been nearly four months now since the EU enforced another new set of energy labelling regulations, affecting the sale and import of corded vacuum cleaners, as part of its energy efficient directive. Designed to tackle climate change, the new requirements saw a reduction in vacuum cleaners’ rated input power as well as the introduction of other rules relating to their design and testing.

It’s important to remember that these changes only apply to dry corded vacuum cleaners – wet, wet & dry and battery operated vacuum cleaners are not included.

Sustainability features high on our agenda here at Jangro, so we welcome any ideas that will reduce energy use. However, while energy efficiency is an important factor to consider when choosing a vacuum, we understand that businesses (and, indeed, consumers for that matter) would most likely place carpet and hard floor cleaning performance well above this.

It’s for this reason that these new regulations caused an uproar back in September – if cleaning performance was compromised, there would surely be a knock-on effect in terms of client satisfaction! In addition, there were real concerns that the tests that inform the vacuum cleaners’ efficiency ratings and labels did not reflect true-life cleaning settings.
